Sompraz: Uses, Side Effects, Dosage & Price post thumbnail image

Consuming different kinds of food and always being on the go in today’s fast-paced world has taken a serious toll on our digestive systems. This extra burden on your tummy manifests itself as several severe gastrointestinal disorders and related symptoms like acid reflux, peptic ulcer disease, and the most commonly observed of them all: acidity. But there are medicines available to deal with these medical conditions, among which is Sompraz.

What is Sompraz?

Sompraz is essentially an antacid and is widely used by people all across the globe for the treatment of stomach issues caused due to increased production of acid in the stomach. It is an over-the-counter (OTC) product and can be obtained only after presenting a valid prescription from a medical expert. The Sompraz medicine is manufactured and marketed by Sun Pharma Laboratories Ltd. Sompraz is also helpful in the prevention of the formation of stomach ulcers, which is a sore that usually develops in the inner walls (lining) of the food pipe, stomach, and/or small intestine.

Composition and Nature of Sompraz:

As far as its nature is concerned, Sompraz is characterized as an antacid among medicines. An antacid is any medicine that is capable of treating medical conditions related to excess production of acid in the stomach.

The major component of Sompraz that is responsible for its effectiveness is esomeprazole. Esomeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor, which means that its main job is to regulate the production of acid in the stomach. In the case of excessive production of stomach acid, the proton-pump inhibitor is responsible for decreasing the quantity of stomach acid produced. Esomeprazole is primarily required to treat the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GRD) and other related medical complications that are caused due to excessive stomach acid.

Esomeprazole is also potent enough to facilitate the healing of erosive esophagitis, which is the damaged lining of the oesophagus caused because of the stomach acid.

Uses and Benefits of Sompraz:

The various uses of Sompraz medicine include but are not limited to the treatment and/or prevention of the following conditions:

  • Erosive esophagitis: this condition involves swelling of the inner lining of the oesophagus. The cause for erosive esophagitis is mostly the backing up of stomach acid into the oesophagus, an infection caused due to microbes and/or foreign organisms or even allergic reactions.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GRD): GRD is a long-term medical condition in which the contents of the stomach (mainly stomach acid and/or bile) travel back up the food pipe. This irritates the inner lining of the oesophagus, and results in heartburn and/or acid reflux.
  • Helicobacter pylori infection: Helicobacter pylori are bacteria that infect the patient’s stomach during childhood and if not treated properly, can grow and thrive in the stomach to cause gastrointestinal problems like peptic ulcers and/or gastritis.
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: this is quite a rare phenomenon in which multiple tumours develop in the lining of the pancreas of the duodenum of the small intestine. These tumours are notorious for secreting large amounts of gastrin hormone that causes the stomach to release too much acid.
  • Ulcers: Ulcers are sores that develop in the digestive system, most commonly in the inner lining of the oesophagus, the stomach and/or the small intestine.

How Sompraz Works?

Since Sompraz medicine is a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI), its effectiveness is dependent on the mechanism of reducing the production of gastric acid. This mechanism is responsible for providing relief to gastrointestinal complications that are caused due to the production of acid.

Hence, the action of Sompraz medicine is dependent on the reduction as well as maintenance of the rate of production of acid in the stomach.
